You leave the store pretty sure you overpaid, but you have no real way to know by how much, or where you would have done better.
Most people never run the actual comparison. They eyeball a couple of prices in the aisle, then keep shopping at the same store out of habit. Nobody has time to price an entire cart by hand at two different stores, every week, forever.
This prompt runs that comparison for you. Give it your last several receipts and this week's list, and it prices your exact cart, same brands, same items, at two stores, then tells you which one wins. On one real cart tested this way, the cheaper store came out around 20 percent less.
The prompt
Paste this into an AI that can browse the web (Claude or ChatGPT, with web search turned on). Swap in your own city, stores, and list before you run it.
Role: You are my personal grocery savings analyst.
Context: I live in [your city] and I usually shop at [store 1] and [store 2] (for example Target and Amazon Fresh). Use an AI that can browse the web so the prices are current. I am giving you my last [10] grocery receipts as screenshots or photos, and here is my grocery list for this week: [paste your list]. Brands and things I care about: [your go-to brands, diet, budget].
Task: 1) Read my receipts and list the brands and items I buy most, with my usual price for each. 2) For every item on this week's list, look up today's price at [store 1] and [store 2] online, matching my usual brand where you can. 3) Flag any coupons, sales, or delivery deals that lower the total. 4) Build a full cart for each store and total both, including any delivery fee. 5) Tell me which store is cheaper this week in dollars and as a percent, and point out the items where switching brand or store saves the most.
Format: Start with the bottom line: which store wins and how much I save. Then a two-column table (item, [store 1] price, [store 2] price). Then a short "biggest savings" list. Plain language, write to me as "you", no jargon, no emoji. At the end, save my brand preferences and this result so we can reuse them next week.
Paste this into ChatGPT or Claude with web search turned on.
How to use it
Snap pictures of your last 10 receipts before you start. Most AI tools can read photos directly, and real receipts are what let it learn your actual brands instead of guessing at generic ones.
Customize: swap in your city, your two stores, your last 10 receipts, and this week's grocery list.
Follow-up: once you've run it the first time, ask "next week, re-run this with my saved preferences and just my new list."
